Financial Calculators
Payback Period Calculator
Calculate how many periods it takes to recover an initial investment from cash flows locally in your browser.
This private browser estimate calculates the time needed to recover an initial investment from periodic cash inflows. It uses simple cumulative cash flow without discounting. For discounted payback, use the NPV calculator with increasing periods. Enter cash flows as one value per line or comma-separated (Period 1, Period 2, …).
Estimate the time needed to break even on an investment.
Enter the initial investment and a series of expected cash flows (one per line or comma-separated). The calculator adds each cash flow cumulatively until it equals or exceeds the initial investment. The result shows the payback period in periods, with fractional periods when recovery happens partway through a cash flow. This private browser estimate uses simple cumulative cash flow without discounting; for discounted payback, use the NPV calculator. It is not financial, investment, or tax advice; your values are not uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What is the payback period?
The payback period is the time it takes for cumulative cash inflows to equal the initial investment. It measures how quickly an investment recovers its cost without considering the time value of money.
How does this calculator handle fractional periods?
When the investment is recovered partway through a period, the calculator adds the fraction of that period needed. For example, if $8,000 is recovered after period 2 and the period 3 cash flow is $4,000, the payback period is 2.5 periods (2 + 2,000/4,000).
What if the investment is never recovered?
The calculator shows an error with the total cash inflows entered and the initial investment, so you can see the shortfall.
Is this the same as discounted payback period?
No. This calculator uses simple cumulative cash flows without discounting. For discounted payback period, use the NPV calculator with increasing periods to find when the discounted cumulative present value turns positive.
Do my values stay private?
