Financial Calculators
NPV Calculator
Calculate net present value from an initial investment, discount rate, and cash flow series locally in your browser.
This private browser estimate calculates NPV using a constant discount rate and discrete periods. It does not account for fees, taxes, inflation, changing rates, or irregular timing. Enter cash flows as one value per line or comma-separated (Year 1, Year 2, …).
Estimate whether an investment adds value using discounted cash flows.
Enter the initial investment, a discount rate per period, and a series of expected cash flows (one per line or comma-separated). The calculator discounts each cash flow to its present value and subtracts the initial investment. A positive NPV suggests the investment may exceed the required return; a negative NPV suggests it may fall short. This private browser estimate uses a constant discount rate and discrete periods and does not account for fees, taxes, inflation, changing rates, or irregular timing. It is not financial, investment, or tax advice; your values are not uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What is net present value (NPV)?
Net present value is the sum of all future cash flows discounted to today, minus the initial investment. A positive NPV means the investment is expected to earn more than the discount rate; a negative NPV means it earns less.
What formula does the NPV calculator use?
NPV = -Initial Investment + Σ(Cash Flow_t ÷ (1 + r)^t), where r is the discount rate per period as a decimal and t is the period number starting from 1. Each cash flow is discounted separately and summed.
How should I enter cash flows?
Enter one cash flow per line or separate them with commas. For example, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 represents Year 1 through Year 4 cash flows. The calculator numbers them sequentially starting from Year 1.
What discount rate should I use?
Use your required rate of return, cost of capital, or hurdle rate. For example, if you require an 8% annual return, enter 8. The rate should match the period of your cash flows (e.g., annual rate for annual cash flows).
Do my values stay private, and is this financial advice?
Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter. This is a general estimate, not financial, investment, or tax advice.
