Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is gross profit divided by revenue (profit as a share of selling price). Markup is gross profit divided by cost (profit as a share of cost). For example, a cost and revenue gives a 33.33% margin and a 50% markup.
Which two values do I need to enter?
Enter any two of cost, revenue, margin, or markup. The calculator will derive the remaining values.
Can margin be negative?
Yes. A negative margin means the cost exceeds revenue, indicating a loss. Margin must be greater than -100% and less than or equal to 100%.
Do my values stay private, and is this financial advice?
Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser, and CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter. This is a general planning estimate, not financial advice.
