Gravel Calculator

Estimate gravel volume, weight, and bags to buy from coverage area, depth, and waste allowance locally in your browser.

Enter the coverage area in square feet and the gravel depth in inches to estimate the gravel volume, weight, and bags to buy, including a waste allowance for compaction and uneven spreading. The calculation runs locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.

Your gravel estimate will appear here.

Buy estimate uses a 0.5 cu ft bag when bag size is left blank. Weight uses about 105 lb per cu ft (1680 kg per m^3) for dry gravel; supplier density varies by stone type and moisture, so confirm bulk orders by weight. This volume estimate is a planning guide, not a purchase guarantee.

Find how much gravel to buy without uploading anything.

Enter the coverage area in square feet or square meters, the gravel depth, an optional bag size, and a waste allowance to see the exact gravel volume, estimated weight, and the rounded-up bag count. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your values are not uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

What does the gravel calculator show?

Enter the coverage area, the gravel depth, an optional bag size, and a waste allowance. The calculator returns the exact gravel volume, the estimated weight, and the bag count rounded up to whole bags with the calculation shown. For example, 200 sq ft at 4 inches deep with 10% waste needs about 73.33 cu ft (2.72 cu yd, about 3.85 tons), so buy 147 half-cubic-foot bags.

Which formula does the gravel calculator use?

Imperial mode uses volume = coverage area in sq ft x (depth in inches / 12) to get cubic feet, then total = volume x (1 + waste percent / 100), cubic yards = total / 27, weight in tons = total x 105 lb per cu ft / 2000, and bags = total rounded up divided by the bag size. Metric mode uses volume = coverage area in sq m x (depth in cm / 100) to get cubic meters, then total liters = total x 1000, weight = total x 1680 kg per m^3, and bags = total liters rounded up divided by the bag size in liters. A blank bag size uses 0.5 cu ft per bag in imperial mode or 20 L per bag in metric mode.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter a coverage area greater than zero through 1000000000, a gravel depth greater than zero through 120 inches or 300 centimeters, an optional bag size greater than zero through 1000000, and a waste allowance from 0 to 100 percent (blank means 10). Decimal areas, depths, and bag sizes are accepted. Zero, negative numbers, non-numeric text, and values outside these limits show a clear error instead of a result.

Do my numbers stay private?

Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter.
