Calculators

Mulch Calculator

Estimate mulch volume and bags to buy from bed area, depth, and waste allowance locally in your browser.

Enter the bed area in square feet and the mulch depth in inches to estimate the mulch volume and bags to buy, including a waste allowance for settling and uneven spreading. The calculation runs locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.

Your mulch estimate will appear here.

Buy estimate uses a 2 cu ft bag when bag size is left blank. A 2 to 4 inch layer suits most beds; check your mulch bag label because settled volume varies by material. This volume estimate is a planning guide, not a purchase guarantee.

Find how much mulch to buy without uploading anything.

Enter the bed area in square feet or square meters, the mulch depth, an optional bag size, and a waste allowance to see the exact mulch volume and the rounded-up bag count. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your values are not uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

What does the mulch calculator show?

Enter the bed area, the mulch depth, an optional bag size, and a waste allowance. The calculator returns the exact mulch volume and the bag count rounded up to whole bags with the calculation shown. For example, 200 sq ft at 3 inches deep with 10% waste needs about 55 cu ft (2.04 cu yd), so buy 28 two-cubic-foot bags.

Which formula does the mulch calculator use?

Imperial mode uses volume = bed area in sq ft x (depth in inches / 12) to get cubic feet, then total = volume x (1 + waste percent / 100), cubic yards = total / 27, and bags = total rounded up divided by the bag size. Metric mode uses volume = bed area in sq m x (depth in cm / 100) to get cubic meters, then total liters = total x 1000 and bags = total liters rounded up divided by the bag size in liters. A blank bag size uses 2 cu ft per bag in imperial mode or 50 L per bag in metric mode.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter a bed area greater than zero through 1000000000, a mulch depth greater than zero through 120 inches or 300 centimeters, an optional bag size greater than zero through 1000000, and a waste allowance from 0 to 100 percent (blank means 10). Decimal areas, depths, and bag sizes are accepted. Zero, negative numbers, non-numeric text, and values outside these limits show a clear error instead of a result.

Do my numbers stay private?

Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter.
