Calculators

Fence Calculator

Estimate fence pickets and bundles to buy from fence length, picket width, gap, and waste allowance locally in your browser.

Enter the fence run length, a single picket width, and the gap between pickets in feet to estimate how many pickets to buy, including a waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and uneven runs. The calculation runs locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.

Your fence estimate will appear here.

Enter picket dimensions in the same unit as the fence; for example, a 5.5 inch picket is about 0.46 ft. Use 0 gap for a privacy fence with touching pickets. This estimate covers one straight run and ignores posts, rails, gates, and slope, so measure each run separately. Check your supplier because picket sizes and bundle counts vary by product. This fence estimate is a planning guide, not a purchase guarantee.

Find how many fence pickets to buy without uploading anything.

Enter the fence run length plus a single picket width and gap, an optional pickets-per-bundle count, and a waste allowance to see the picket count and rounded-up bundle count. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your values are not uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

What does the fence calculator show?

Enter the fence run length, a single picket width and gap in the same unit, an optional pickets-per-bundle count, and a waste allowance. The calculator returns the picket count with waste rounded up, plus the bundle count when pickets per bundle is given, with the calculation shown. For example, a 50 ft fence with 0.46 ft pickets, no gap, and 10% waste needs about 120 pickets, so buy 20 bundles at 6 pickets per bundle.

Which formula does the fence calculator use?

It uses spacing = picket width + gap, then pickets = fence length / spacing x (1 + waste percent / 100) rounded up, and bundles = pickets / pickets per bundle rounded up. Use the same length unit for the fence and the picket; for example, a 5.5 inch picket is about 0.46 ft. Use 0 gap for a privacy fence with touching pickets. The estimate covers one straight run and ignores posts, rails, gates, and slope, so measure each run separately.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter a fence length and picket width greater than zero through 1000000000, a gap from 0 to 1000000000 (blank means 0), an optional pickets-per-bundle whole number from 1 to 1000000000, and a waste allowance from 0 to 100 percent (blank means 10). Decimal lengths are accepted. Zero lengths, negative numbers, non-numeric text, and values outside these limits show a clear error instead of a result.

Do my numbers stay private?

Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter.
