VO2 Max Calculator

Estimate your VO2 max from a 12-minute run distance or a one-mile walk test locally in your browser.

VO2 max details
Your estimated VO2 max will appear here.

Estimate your VO2 max from a simple field test.

Choose the Cooper 12-minute run and enter the distance you covered, or choose the Rockport one-mile walk and enter your age, sex, weight, walk time in minutes, and heart rate right after the walk. The estimate is returned in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/(kg·min)). Field tests approximate VO2 max and are not a laboratory measurement or medical advice; your values are calculated locally and are not uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

How does the VO2 max calculator work?

Pick a test method. For the Cooper 12-minute run, enter the distance you covered in 12 minutes and the calculator converts it to VO2 max using the standard Cooper regression. For the Rockport one-mile walk, enter your sex, age, weight, one-mile walk time in minutes, and heart rate immediately after walking; the calculator applies the published Rockport walk-test equation. Both results are reported in mL/(kg·min).

What is VO2 max?

VO2 max is the maximum rate your body can use oxygen during hard exercise, usually expressed in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/(kg·min)). Higher values generally mean better cardiorespiratory fitness.

Which test method should I choose?

Choose the Cooper 12-minute run if you can run continuously for 12 minutes and know your distance. Choose the Rockport one-mile walk if you prefer walking: it needs a timed one-mile walk at a brisk pace and a heart rate reading taken right after you finish.

How accurate is this estimate?

Both methods are field tests. They approximate VO2 max from distance or from heart rate and time, so they are less accurate than a laboratory treadmill or cycle test with a metabolic cart. Use the number to track your own progress over time rather than as a clinical measurement.

Are my details private?

Yes. The calculation runs locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the distance, age, weight, walk time, or heart rate you enter.
