Ideal Weight Calculator

Estimate ideal body weight from your height with the Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas and a BMI-based healthy range locally in your browser.

Enter your height to compare four standard adult ideal weight formulas plus a healthy BMI range for that height. The formulas are sex-specific, so pick the set that applies to you. Calculations run locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.

Compare four standard ideal weight formulas.

Choose the male or female formulas, enter your height in centimetres or feet and inches, and the calculator applies four classic adult ideal body weight equations. Each one is base + per inch × (height in inches − 60): Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi. For example, a man at 175 cm (5 ft 8.9 in) gives Devine 70.5 kg, Robinson 68.9 kg, Miller 68.7 kg, and Hamwi 72.0 kg, with a healthy BMI 18.5–24.9 range of 56.7 to 76.3 kg. The formulas were derived for adults 5 ft and taller, so treat them as a reference range rather than a target; they ignore age, frame size, muscle mass, and body composition. This is a general estimate, not medical advice. Your values are not uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

How does the ideal weight calculator work?

Choose the male or female formulas and enter your height. The calculator applies four classic adult equations, each of the form ideal weight = base + per inch x (height in inches - 60): Devine (male 50, female 45.5 kg base with 2.3 kg per inch), Robinson (52 male and 49 female kg with 1.9 and 1.7 kg per inch), Miller (56.2 male and 53.1 female kg with 1.41 and 1.36 kg per inch), and Hamwi (48 male and 45.5 female kg with 2.7 and 2.2 kg per inch). It also shows the average of the four and the weight range for a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height.

Why do the four formulas give different numbers?

The Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi equations were published between 1964 and 1983 for different clinical purposes, such as drug dosing and nutrition assessment, and each was fitted to a different reference population. They usually differ by only a few kilograms, so the spread is more useful as a range than any single value.

What is the healthy BMI weight range?

It is the weight that gives a body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height, calculated as BMI x height in metres squared. For example, at 175 cm that is about 56.7 to 76.3 kg (124.9 to 168.1 lb). BMI is a screening estimate that does not account for body composition, age, sex, or ethnicity.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter a height from 140 cm to 230 cm, or 4 ft 7 in to 7 ft 6 in using feet with 0 to 11.9 inches. The formulas were derived for adults 5 ft and taller, so results below 5 ft are a linear extrapolation. Missing, non-numeric, or out-of-range entries show a clear error instead of a result.

Is this a target weight or medical advice?

No. These are population formulas, not a personal target or a diagnosis. They ignore age, sex-specific body composition, frame size, muscle mass, pregnancy, and health conditions, and they are not medical advice. Discuss personal weight and health questions with a qualified healthcare professional. Your values are calculated and copied locally in your browser, not uploaded or stored.
