Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

What is an RMD?

A Required Minimum Distribution is the minimum amount you must withdraw from most tax-deferred retirement accounts each year after you reach RMD age. The IRS requires RMDs from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and similar plans. Roth IRAs do not have RMDs during the owner's lifetime. The penalty for missing an RMD is 25% of the shortfall (or 10% if corrected timely).

At what age do RMDs start?

Under current law (SECURE 2.0 Act), RMDs begin at age 73 for those who turn 73 in 2023 or later, and at age 75 starting in 2033. For those who turned 72 before 2023, the age was 72. This calculator uses the Uniform Lifetime Table for ages 72 through 120+.

How is the RMD calculated?

RMD = Account balance (December 31 of the prior year) ÷ Distribution period from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. The distribution period is based on your age in the distribution year. For example, at age 75 the distribution period is 24.7, so a $500,000 balance gives an RMD of $20,242.91.

Does this cover inherited or Roth accounts?

No. This calculator uses the Uniform Lifetime Table for account owners. Inherited accounts use different tables (Single Life Expectancy or 10-year rule). Roth IRAs have no RMDs during the owner's lifetime. Consult a tax professional for inherited or Roth account distributions.

Are my values private?
