Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What is the FIRE number and how is it calculated?
The FIRE number is the amount of invested assets you need so that withdrawals at your chosen safe withdrawal rate cover your annual expenses. It is calculated as annual expenses divided by withdrawal rate. For example, $40,000 in annual expenses with a 4% withdrawal rate gives a FIRE number of $1,000,000.
How does the calculator estimate years to FIRE?
It uses the compound growth formula: future value = present value × (1 + r)^n + payment × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r, where r is the real return (expected return minus inflation). It solves for n, the number of years until your portfolio reaches the FIRE number.
What is a safe withdrawal rate and which one should I use?
A safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw annually with a high probability of not depleting it over a 30-year retirement. The 4% rule is a common starting point based on historical US market data. A lower rate such as 3.5% is more conservative; a higher rate such as 5% carries more risk. Adjust based on your retirement length, asset allocation, and risk tolerance.
What are the limitations of this FIRE estimate?
The estimate assumes constant returns, constant inflation, constant expenses, and constant savings. It does not account for taxes, fees, market volatility, sequence-of-returns risk, changing expenses, Social Security, pensions, healthcare costs, or lifestyle changes. It is a planning estimate, not financial, investment, or tax advice.
