Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What formula does the rent affordability calculator use?
It uses max monthly rent = monthly take-home income x (rent percent / 100), max annual rent = max monthly rent x 12, and left for other spending = monthly income - max monthly rent. For example, $5,000 income at 30% gives $1,500 max monthly rent, $18,000 annual rent, and $3,500 left per month.
What rent percentage should I use?
Leave the percentage blank for the common 30% of take-home income guideline, or enter your own value from 5% to 50%. Landlord income rules and personal budgets can differ, so treat the result as a planning starting point.
Which inputs are accepted?
Enter a monthly take-home income greater than zero through 1000000000 and an optional rent percentage from 5% to 50%. Displayed amounts are rounded to two decimal places.
