Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

What formula does the budget calculator use?

It uses needs amount = monthly income x (needs percent / 100), wants amount = monthly income x (wants percent / 100), and savings amount = monthly income x (savings percent / 100). For example, 4000 with the 50/30/20 split gives 2000 for needs, 1200 for wants, and 800 for savings.

Can I use my own percentages?

Yes. Leave the percentages blank for the 50/30/20 starting point, or enter your own needs, wants, and savings values. Custom percentages must add up to 100% or the calculator shows an error instead of a result.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter a monthly take-home income greater than zero through 1000000000 and percentages from 0 through 100% that total 100%. Displayed amounts are rounded to two decimal places.

Do my values stay private, and is this financial advice?

Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter. This is a general planning estimate, not financial advice.
