Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

How does the depreciation calculator work?

Enter the asset cost, salvage value, and useful life in whole years from 1 to 100, then choose a method. Straight-line spreads the depreciable base evenly, double-declining applies twice the straight-line rate to the opening book value, and sum-of-the-years-digits weights earlier years more heavily. For example, a 10,000 asset with 1,000 salvage over 5 years gives 1,800 per year straight-line.

What is the difference between the three methods?

Straight-line gives the same amount every year. Double-declining balance is accelerated, so earlier years show larger depreciation that never drops below salvage value. Sum-of-the-years-digits is also accelerated but follows a fixed declining fraction of the depreciable base each year.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter an asset cost of zero or more, a salvage value of zero or more that does not exceed the cost, and a whole-number useful life from 1 to 100 years. Missing or non-numeric entries show a clear error instead of a result.

Do my values stay private, and is this tax advice?

Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser, and CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter. This is a simplified book-depreciation planning estimate, not financial or tax advice; confirm tax depreciation rules and conventions with your tax authority or advisor.
