Square Pyramid Frustum Calculator
Calculate right square pyramid frustum volume, slant height, and lateral and total surface areas privately in your browser.
Measure a truncated square pyramid.
A right square pyramid frustum has parallel square bases centered on the same perpendicular axis, with corresponding edges aligned. Enter square side lengths a and b and perpendicular height h. Volume V = h(a² + ab + b²)/3; face slant height s = √(h² + ((a − b)/2)²); lateral surface area L = 2(a + b)s; total surface area A = a² + b² + L. The slant height runs between the midpoints of corresponding base edges, not along a corner edge. For a = 6, b = 2, h = 3, volume is 52 cubic units, slant height is √13, and total area is approximately 97.6888204074 square units. Either base may be larger; equal sides give a square prism. Enter positive lengths from 1e-50 to 1e50 in one consistent unit; scientific notation is accepted. Areas use square units and volume uses cubic units. Results use browser floating-point arithmetic rounded to 12 significant digits. This calculator assumes a solid shape and does not estimate hollow container capacity or wall thickness. Inputs stay in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
How is square frustum volume calculated?
Use V = h(a² + ab + b²)/3, where a and b are square base side lengths and h is perpendicular height. Sides 6 and 2 with height 3 give volume 52 cubic units.
What does total surface area include?
Both square bases and the four trapezoidal side faces. Lateral area excludes the two bases.
Is slant height the same as height?
No. Height is perpendicular to the base planes. Face slant height connects corresponding edge midpoints and equals √(h² + ((a − b)/2)²). It is not the corner edge length.
Can the bases be entered in either order?
Yes. Both side lengths must be positive; either may be larger. Equal sides give a square prism. Use consistent units and values from 1e-50 to 1e50.
Are my measurements uploaded?
No. Calculation, reset, and copying run locally in your browser.
