Midpoint Calculator

Find the midpoint of two Cartesian points and their straight-line distance privately in your browser.

Enter two Cartesian points in the same unit. Signed decimals and scientific notation are supported. Use zero or coordinate magnitudes from 1e-100 to 1e100. Calculations stay in your browser.

Find the point halfway between two coordinates.

For Cartesian points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂), the midpoint is ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2). Straight-line distance is √((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²). For (0, 0) and (6, 8), the midpoint is (3, 4) and distance is 10 units. Identical points have the same midpoint and zero distance; horizontal and vertical lines are supported. Use a consistent unit for both axes. This calculator uses a flat Cartesian plane, not geographic latitude and longitude. Enter signed decimals or scientific notation without thousands separators, with coordinate magnitudes from 1e-100 to 1e100 or zero. Browser floating-point arithmetic is approximate and results display up to 12 significant digits. Inputs remain in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

How do I calculate a midpoint?

Average the two x coordinates and average the two y coordinates. For (0, 0) and (6, 8), the midpoint is (3, 4).

Can the points be identical or have negative coordinates?

Yes. Signed coordinates, horizontal and vertical segments, and identical points are supported. Identical points give a distance of zero.

Can I use latitude and longitude?

No. These formulas assume a flat Cartesian plane with both axes in the same unit. Geographic distances require a spherical or ellipsoidal model.

How precise are the results?

Results use browser floating-point arithmetic and up to 12 significant digits. Use zero or coordinate magnitudes from 1e-100 to 1e100. Very small differences between large coordinates may be lost to rounding.

Are my coordinates uploaded?

No. The calculator processes coordinates entirely in your browser.
