Chebyshev Distance Calculator
Calculate the maximum absolute coordinate difference between two numeric vectors privately in your browser.
Enter equal-length numeric vectors, separated by spaces, commas or semicolons. Signed values and scientific notation are supported. Each vector allows 10000 numbers and 200000 characters. The result is the largest absolute coordinate difference. Calculation runs locally in your browser.
How Chebyshev distance works
Chebyshev distance, also called the maximum metric or L-infinity distance, is max |aᵢ − bᵢ| over corresponding coordinates. For A = (1, 2, 3) and B = (4, 6, 3), the absolute differences are 3, 4 and 0, so the distance is 4 at coordinate 2. Identical vectors, including two zero vectors, have distance 0. Coordinates must use matching order and comparable units: a coordinate with a larger scale can dominate. Unlike Euclidean distance, this metric takes only the largest difference rather than combining squared differences. In a two-dimensional grid with unrestricted diagonal moves, it equals the minimum number of king moves between integer-coordinate positions. The result also gives the first coordinate attaining the maximum, counted from 1. Enter equal-length vectors of 1 to 10000 finite signed decimal numbers, separated by spaces, commas or semicolons. Scientific notation is supported; commas separate values rather than thousands. Each input allows 200000 characters. Values that underflow to zero and differences exceeding the browser numeric range are rejected. Results show up to 12 significant digits and use browser floating-point arithmetic. All processing stays in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What is the Chebyshev distance formula?
Take the absolute difference at every corresponding coordinate, then choose the largest: max |aᵢ − bᵢ|.
Can I enter negative numbers or zeros?
Yes. Signed finite values and zero vectors are allowed. Identical vectors give distance zero.
How are ties reported?
The calculator reports the first coordinate with the maximum absolute difference, using positions starting at 1.
Is this the same as Euclidean distance?
No. Euclidean distance combines squared coordinate differences. Chebyshev distance uses only the largest absolute difference.
Should coordinates have matching units?
Use comparable units and scales. A coordinate measured on a much larger scale can dominate the maximum; inputs are not normalized automatically.
