Calculators
Wind Chill Calculator
Estimate the wind chill from air temperature and wind speed with cold-risk categories locally in your browser.
Enter the air temperature and wind speed to estimate how cold it feels. Calculations run locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.
See how cold it actually feels before you head outside.
Enter the air temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius and the wind speed in miles per hour or kilometres per hour. The calculator applies the US National Weather Service wind chill formula to estimate the apparent temperature your body feels and shows the matching cold-risk category. This is an atmospheric estimate, not a weather forecast, and your values are calculated locally without being uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What formula does the wind chill calculator use?
It applies the US National Weather Service wind chill formula: 35.74 + 0.6215 x T - 35.75 x V^0.16 + 0.4275 x T x V^0.16, where T is the air temperature in Fahrenheit and V is the wind speed in miles per hour. For example, 30 degrees F with a 10 mph wind gives a wind chill of about 21 degrees F.
What is the difference between wind chill and air temperature?
Air temperature is measured in calm conditions, while wind chill is an apparent temperature that accounts for how wind strips heat from exposed skin and makes it feel colder. Stronger wind at the same air temperature produces a lower wind chill.
What do the cold-risk categories mean?
At or above 32 degrees F there is little freezing discomfort. From 0 to 32 degrees F it is freezing, so dress warmly. From -18 to 0 degrees F frostbite is possible within 30 minutes on exposed skin. Below -18 degrees F there is extreme caution because frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes.
Which inputs are accepted?
Enter an air temperature from -50 to 50 degrees F (-45 to 10 degrees C) and a wind speed from 3 to 200 mph (4.8 to 322 km/h). Missing or non-numeric entries show a clear error instead of a result.
Do my values stay private?
Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter.
