Calculators

Variance Calculator

Calculate population or sample variance for a numeric dataset locally in your browser.

Enter numbers separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. Choose population to divide by N, or sample to divide by N − 1. The calculation runs locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.

Enter numbers separated by commas, spaces, or new lines, then choose population or sample variance to see the count, mean, variance, and standard deviation with the formula shown. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your values are not uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

What does the variance calculator show?

Enter numbers separated by commas, spaces, or new lines, then choose population or sample variance. The calculator returns the variance, the matching standard deviation, the count, and the mean with the formula shown. For example, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 gives population variance 8 and sample variance 10.

Which formula does the variance calculator use?

It finds the mean, adds the squared difference between each value and that mean, then divides by N for a population or N minus 1 for a sample. Population variance is the sum of (x minus x-bar) squared divided by N; sample variance divides by N minus 1. The standard deviation shown is the square root of that variance.

When should I use population or sample variance?

Use population mode when your values are the entire group you want to describe. Use sample mode when the values are a sample used to estimate a larger population; it needs at least two values because it divides by N minus 1.

Which inputs are accepted?

Enter at least one finite number from -1000000000 to 1000000000, up to 10000 values, separated by commas, spaces, semicolons, or new lines. Sample mode needs at least two values. Empty input, non-numeric text, and values outside these limits show a clear error instead of a result.

Do my dataset values stay private?

Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter.
