Spring Energy Calculator
Calculate elastic potential energy, spring constant, or displacement for an ideal linear spring.
Choose what to solve for, then enter the other two values using consistent units (for example, newtons per metre with metres for joules). This models an ideal linear spring within its elastic limit. Displacement is measured from the relaxed position; the inverse gives its magnitude. Calculations run locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.
Calculate stored elastic energy with E = ½kx².
Use spring constant in newtons per metre, displacement from equilibrium in metres, and energy in joules. A 200 N/m spring displaced by 0.1 m stores 1 J. This ideal linear model applies within the elastic limit and ignores friction, damping, and permanent deformation. The inverse displacement result is a magnitude: compression and extension store the same energy. All calculations run locally in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
How is spring energy calculated?
Energy E = 0.5 × k × x², where k is spring constant in N/m and x is displacement in metres. For k = 200 N/m and x = 0.1 m, E = 1 joule. The inverse formulas are k = 2E/x² and |x| = √(2E/k).
Can I enter negative displacement?
Yes. Compression and extension with equal displacement magnitude store the same energy. Energy and spring constant must be nonnegative. Solving for spring constant requires nonzero displacement; solving for displacement requires positive spring constant. Inputs are limited to a magnitude of 1 trillion.
When does this spring model apply?
This model assumes an ideal linear spring obeying Hooke’s law within its elastic limit. It ignores friction, damping, and permanent deformation. It does not describe nonlinear springs.
Are my inputs uploaded?
