Spearman Rank Correlation Calculator

Calculate Spearman rho for paired datasets with average ranks for tied values, privately in your browser.

Enter two paired datasets with the same number of values in the same order, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. Uses average ranks for ties to measure monotonic association. The calculation runs locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.

Your Spearman correlation will appear here.

Measure monotonic association with ranked data.

Spearman rho is Pearson correlation applied to ranks. Rank each dataset independently in ascending order, assigning tied observations the average of their occupied ranks, then calculate rho = Σ((R − R̄)(S − S̄)) / √(Σ(R − R̄)² × Σ(S − S̄)²). For X = 1, 2, 3 and Y = 10, 20, 40, rho is 1 despite the nonlinear spacing. For X = 1, 2, 2 and Y = 1, 2, 3, the X ranks are 1, 2.5, 2.5 and rho is approximately 0.866025403784. The simplified no-ties formula is not used, so tied values are supported. Values near +1 indicate increasing monotonic association and near −1 decreasing association. Zero rank correlation does not rule out a non-monotonic relationship. Correlation does not establish causation. No p-value or significance test is supplied. Enter 2 to 10000 paired finite numbers per dataset between −1e9 and 1e9, separated by commas, spaces, semicolons or newlines. Scientific notation is accepted; omit thousands separators. Constant datasets are undefined. Results use browser floating-point arithmetic and display up to 12 significant digits. All processing stays in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

How are ties handled?

Equal values receive the average of their rank positions. For 1, 2, 2 the ranks are 1, 2.5, 2.5. The calculator then computes Pearson correlation of those ranks.

How does Spearman differ from Pearson correlation?

Spearman measures monotonic association using ranks. Pearson measures linear association using the original values. A consistently increasing nonlinear relationship can have Spearman rho of 1.

What inputs can I use?

Enter 2 to 10000 paired values per dataset, each from -1e9 to 1e9. Both lists must have the same length and each must vary. Separate numbers with commas, semicolons, spaces or newlines; scientific notation is accepted.

Does rho show statistical significance?

No. This calculator reports a descriptive rank correlation, not a p-value or significance test. Correlation alone does not establish causation. Calculations stay in your browser.
