Find the resonant frequency of an ideal LC circuit.

An ideal inductor and capacitor resonate when their reactance magnitudes are equal. Use f = 1 / (2π√(LC)), with frequency in hertz, inductance in henries, and capacitance in farads. Rearranging gives L = 1 / ((2πf)²C) and C = 1 / ((2πf)²L). For example, 10 mH and 100 nF resonate at approximately 5.033 kHz. The formula describes ideal series and parallel LC networks. Resistance, component tolerances, loading, and parasitic effects can shift practical resonance; this tool does not estimate bandwidth or quality factor. Values are processed locally without uploading or storing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.

How do I calculate LC resonance?

Use f = 1 / (2π√(LC)), where L is in henries and C is in farads. A 10 mH inductor and 100 nF capacitor give approximately 5032.921 Hz, or 5.033 kHz.

How do I find the required inductor or capacitor?

Choose inductance or capacitance in the solve selector. Enter the target frequency and the other component. The calculator uses L = 1 / ((2πf)²C) or C = 1 / ((2πf)²L). All inputs must be greater than zero.

Does this work for series and parallel LC circuits?

The ideal resonance formula applies to both. Real component resistance, loading, and parasitic effects may shift resonance. This calculator does not model losses, bandwidth, or quality factor.
