Board Foot Calculator
Estimate lumber volume in board feet from thickness, width, length, and pieces with waste allowance locally in your browser.
Enter the nominal board thickness and width in inches, the board length in feet, and the number of identical pieces to estimate lumber volume in board feet, including a waste allowance for cuts and defects. The calculation runs locally in your browser; your values are not uploaded or stored.
One board foot equals a 12 inch by 12 inch by 1 inch volume, so thickness times width (inches) times length (feet) times pieces divided by 12 gives the lumber volume. This estimate uses the nominal sizes you enter and covers identical boards only, ignoring kerf, planing, grading, and moisture differences, so measure each board size separately and confirm pricing with your lumber supplier. This board foot estimate is a planning guide, not a purchase guarantee.
Estimate lumber board feet without uploading anything.
Enter the board thickness and width in inches, the length in feet, and the number of identical pieces. The calculator applies thickness × width × length × pieces ÷ 12 and adds the waste allowance, then shows the worked volume. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your values are not uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this tool, how it works, and privacy.
What formula does the board foot calculator use?
It uses board feet = thickness (inches) x width (inches) x length (feet) x pieces / 12, then adds the waste allowance. For example, ten 2 in x 6 in x 8 ft boards give 80 board feet before waste, and 88 board feet with 10 percent waste.
Which inputs are accepted?
Enter thickness, width, and length greater than zero through 1000000000, whole-number pieces from 1 to 1000000, and an optional waste allowance from 0 to 100 percent (10 percent when blank). Missing or non-numeric entries show a clear error instead of a result.
Does this use nominal or actual lumber sizes?
It uses the exact sizes you enter, so enter nominal sizes for nominal board feet or actual measured sizes for actual volume. Kerf, planing, grading, and moisture differences are not included, so confirm pricing with your lumber supplier.
Do my values stay private?
Yes. The calculation and copy action run locally in your browser. CodeASystem does not upload or store the values you enter.
