Why the RDA is not the goal

Nitrogen-balance studies behind the 0.8 g/kg RDA asked only "how much prevents deficiency?"; like asking the minimum fuel to keep an engine from stalling. Athletes, older adults preserving muscle, and anyone dieting all sit measurably higher on the dose-response curve.

Timing matters less than totals

The anabolic window has widened from thirty minutes to several hours in modern research. Total daily intake dominates; spreading it over meals is a helpful refinement, not a requirement.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 g per kilogram of body weight is the intake preventing deficiency in sedentary adults; a floor, not an optimum. For active people we apply level-specific ranges up to 1.2–2.2 g/kg, consistent with position stands from sports-nutrition bodies.

Ranges rather than single numbers reflect honest science: meta-analyses find benefit plateauing somewhere inside these windows depending on training type, energy balance and age.

Assumptions & limitations

  • Healthy kidneys; high-protein intakes are not advised for untreated kidney disease.
  • Ranges assume adequate total calories; severe dieting pushes needs toward the top.
  • Whole-food sources preferred; supplements merely fill gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Is too much protein harmful?
In people with healthy kidneys, intakes up to ~2.2 g/kg show no adverse effects in controlled trials. Pre-existing kidney disease is a different situation requiring medical guidance.
Do I need protein powder?
Only convenience requires it. Whole foods easily reach these targets; shakes simply make busy days easier to construct.
How do plant-based eaters hit these numbers?
Legumes, soy products, seitan and grains combine fine; aiming slightly higher (~10%) compensates for somewhat lower digestibility of plant proteins.
