Reading pace against race standards
A 5:00 min/km pace finishes a parkrun in 25:00 and a marathon around 3:32; pace makes targets tangible in a way finish-time goals alone do not. Most training plans prescribe easy runs 1–2 minutes per km slower than 5K pace.
Treadmill versus outdoor numbers
Treadmill belts often miscalibrate by 2–5%, and indoor running lacks air resistance and wind. Expect outdoor equivalents to feel harder at identical belt speeds, especially above 4:30 min/km.
Using speed instead
Cyclists and rowers think in speed units; runners in pace. Having both lets you sanity-check treadmill consoles, bike computers and GPS watches that insist on different conventions.

Pace = duration ÷ distance
min/mile = min/km × 1.609344 Speed (km/h) = distance ÷ hoursPace is total time divided by total distance, displayed in minutes-and-seconds per kilometre or mile depending on your unit choice. Speed is the reciprocal view expressed as kilometres per hour.
Duration accepts plain decimal minutes so watch data converts without fuss: enter 57 for a 56:30 run rounded up, or 47.5 for 47:30.
Assumptions & limitations
- Constant effort across the distance; no pacing surges modeled.
- GPS-measured distances assumed accurate to typical ±1%.
- Mile conversions use the exact statute mile of 1.609344 km.
Worked example
Covering 10 km in 57 minutes works out to a 5:42 min/km pace, equivalent to about 10.53 km/h of average speed.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- How do I enter 48 minutes 20 seconds?
- Type 48.33 (20 s ÷ 60 ≈ 0.33). Rounding to the nearest half-minute barely moves the result.
- Why is my watch’s mile pace different?
- Watch GPS smoothing, auto-lap rounding and the 1.609344 conversion each add small drift; discrepancies under ~5 s/mile are normal.
- What pace should easy runs be?
- A common anchor: conversational effort, roughly 60–75 seconds per km slower than current 5K pace, adjusted by feel and heart rate.
