Calculator inputs

730 h is the industry-standard month.

Using the aws ec2 cost calculator

  1. 01

    Pick an instance family

    t3 burstable for dev/web, m5 general, c5 compute-bound, r5 memory-hungry.

  2. 02

    Set hours and fleet size

730 covers always-on; lower figures model office-hours or autoscaled averages.

  3. 03

    Confirm live pricing

Treat the result as an order-of-magnitude planning figure and verify against the AWS console before committing.

On-demand is the most expensive baseline

Steady workloads cut 30–60% with one- or three-year Savings Plans or Reserved Instances; interruptible batch work drops up to 90% with Spot. Use on-demand figures as the ceiling, then negotiate down from there.

What the hourly rate hides

EBS gp3 storage (~$0.08/GB-month), snapshots, inter-region transfer and public IPs all bill separately. Production stacks often spend more outside the instance line than on it; budget accordingly.

The math behind this calculator

monthly = rate($/h) × hours × instances yearly = monthly × 12

On-demand list rates are multiplied by running hours and instance count; yearly cost simply scales the month. The table holds static us-east-1 Linux on-demand snapshot prices checked August 2026; no live AWS API is queried.

Assumptions & limitations

  • us-east-1, Linux, shared tenancy, on-demand pricing only.
  • Static us-east-1 on-demand snapshot prices checked August 2026; AWS changes pricing frequently; always confirm current rates. Savings Plans/Reserved Instances/Spot change effective prices dramatically.
  • EBS volumes, data transfer and elastic IPs bill separately.

Worked example

One t3.medium running the standard 730-hour month costs 0.0416 × 730 ≈ $30.37/month; about $364/year before any discounts.

Frequently asked questions

Which region are these prices for?
us-east-1 (N. Virginia), generally the cheapest. Other regions run roughly 10–40% higher.
Does this include the free tier?
No. New accounts get 750 t3.micro or t2.micro hours monthly for 12 months; subtract that manually if applicable.
How current is the price table?
Snapshot checked August 2026. AWS revises prices periodically; always confirm in the console for spend decisions.
